My Favourite Raids

Over more than twenty years of history, World of Warcraft has introduced dozens of raids. Raiding has always been the ultimate test of preparation, team coordination, and class mechanics. As a veteran player and writer, I have experienced every raid tier the game has to offer. While every expansion brings new challenges, a few specific raids stand out as timeless masterpieces of dungeon design and storytelling.

Molten Core and the Roots of Raiding

While modern raids are technically more complex, the original Molten Core holds a special place in my heart due to its scale and social impact. Entering the fiery depths of Blackrock Mountain with thirty-nine other players was an incredible experience. As a Hunter, my role in Molten Core was highly specific and required a deep understanding of pulling mechanics.

I was responsible for pulling bosses and trash packs safely to the raid group using a combination of long-range shots and Feign Death. Managing the threats of core hounds, fire elementals, and eventually Ragnaros taught me the basic principles of crowd control and positioning. The sense of community and shared victory from those early forty-player runs forms the foundation of my appreciation for endgame content.

Ulduar and the Brilliance of Hard Modes

Released during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, Ulduar represents a high point in dungeon design. The most brilliant feature of Ulduar was how developers handled higher difficulty levels. Instead of choosing a difficulty from a simple menu, players activated hard modes through specific actions during the boss fights.

For example, defeating Thorim required a split-group run through a dangerous gauntlet, while activating Mimiron’s hard mode involved pressing a literal self-destruct button in his room. This immersive method of adjusting the challenge made the dungeon feel like a living, interactive puzzle. Additionally, the art design and cosmic lore of the Titan facility made every room a joy to explore.

The Nighthold and Tactical Spacing

The Nighthold, released during the Legion expansion, stands out as an exceptional modern raid. Set within the beautiful elven city of Suramar, the raid combined compelling storytelling with excellent mechanical design. Battles like Krosus, fought on a crumbling bridge, and Star Augur Etraeus, which shifted visual environments as the fight progressed, required precise positioning.

As a ranged player, the spacious arenas allowed me to optimize my distance from enemies and coordinate utility spells with other ranged classes. The narrative buildup through the Suramar quest lines made entering the raid feel highly satisfying, showing how world-building can elevate a raiding experience.
